Wild, Wacky, Wonderful, Weird Weather

The weather has decided to show its true Montana colors the last week or two. One day we have a high of 97, the next it's 65. Then back to averages in low 80s....nice. Followed by a dramatic change yesterday. Severe storm warnings....thunder, rain, hail....and we got it all. Made for an interesting sky.



The rain and hail didn't hit until the sun starting peeking out again.



Within 10 minutes the temperature dropped from 65 to 48. The low last night was forecast in the mid-30's. I have no idea what it finally was, my outside thermometer came in yesterday morning as I packed up all my outside gear in preparation for leaving tomorrow afternoon. It then rained most of the night and off & on early this morning.

The topper of the day, I thought, was discovering on a the Sunday before Labor Day that my propane tank read empty. Glad I have the electric space heater!

But the REAL topper was this morning as I ran last minute errands and enjoyed breakfast out. Snow....yup, you heard me, SNOW. For the last couple of hours it's been snowing off & on. Too warm to stick, still fun to watch....from inside.

I work this afternoon till 7 pm but don't expect to be very busy. Tomorrow is a morning shift but I hope to take the RV out for propane & gas before hitting work at 10 am. I get off at 2:30 and hope to be on the road by 3:30. Will spend the night in Reed Point, MT at the Old West RV Park where Stu & I stayed twice. Will be in Colorado Springs late afternoon, early evening on Thursday. Winterizing the rig on Friday as well as seeing family & friends. Flight out of the Springs on Saturday, headed to Baltimore and my sweetie...the start of a wonderful new adventure!

I know I promised that I'd blog about Yellowstone next but I still have to choose & edit photos from the over 400 we took during two days. I spent a little time catching up on reader email & blog comments so thought I would do a Readers Ask blog to reply to those I couldn't (no email address) or those that were of general interest (I think). Have to admit it took me reading & re-reading what I wrote that figure out where these comments came from. As many of you have noticed, I don't proof edit my blogs. LOL! I spent too many years doing professional writing that required that as well as proofing others work. Well, in this case I should have.....see if you can find the problem.

I never heard anything more on that accident or what caused it. It was not a pretty sight. But did hear about another VERY bad accident in Buffalo that killed a man and seriously injured his wife. Seems they lost their brakes coming through the mountains, couldn't stop when they hit town and ran into a building at a T intersection. A strong reminder to not overtax your brakes in the mountains....AND if towing a trailer or fifth wheel, be sure your truck is equipped to handle stopping the combined weight of your rig and all your stuff.

That's an easy one....I get between 7 & 8 mpg regardless of what I'm towing or how much my rig weighs. Just seems to be the set point for it....unless I put my foot in it. LOL!

I hadn't seriously looked at Workamping even though I had subscribed to Workamper News for almost 2 years (if anyone joins, please use me as your reference - #48536). I had gone as far as making my application on their website and there had been a few "look-sees" by employers. Since many employers are looking for couples (one inside, one outside), I knew my chances were slim.

Since I didn't want a 5-6 month committment, I figured my best chance was a late season replacement opening and planned to look for one after the Escapade. Before I could do that, I was contacted by the owners of the Conestoga Campground and offered a position for two months (till after Labor Day). We agreed that I would only work inside (not into doing yard work and not capable of mechanical/repair work). This was a first solo experience for them as well as for me. Turns out there were two other workamp couples - one a replacement for a couple leaving and the other here for the season.

It's been wonderful....I would come back here in a heartbeat. I work four half days a week - Monday & Friday I work from 2:30-7pm and Tuesday and Saturday I work from 10am-2:30. The two morning shifts include cleaning the bathrooms but so far that has never been bad.

I answer the phone, enter reservations, check campers in and out, ring up items from the store and if there is an ice cream social on my late day, then I stay to ring up those sales. The owners are great...while there are a few things to do to fill time (vacuuming, dusting, checking stock), for the most part if I'm not busy I can read, work on the computer, play games, do puzzles, etc.

The weather here is wonderful....most days are in the upper 70's to upper 80's. There have been very few in the 90's. The nights range from 40's-50's with a few up into the 60's. Nice sleeping weather. There are winds....haven't put my big awning out at all. Many afternoons there is a big wind followed by a little rain. Nothing overly severe.

The town is cute, enough supplies to take care of basic needs but within 1.5-2 hrs there are several major cities for sightseeing and big shopping. The sunsets are glorious....here are a few more samples of post storm & sunset pics.

Cell Phones, Weather & Pet Notes

Wanted to pass along a warning I read in the RVTravel.com newsletter today. Seems like both Washington and California have new cell phone laws that went into effect on July 1st. Both now require headsets when using a cell phone and driving. New York has had this in place for many years now. Wonder who will be next?

The weather has been pretty nice so far....it was in the mid to upper 70's this weekend with lows in the 40's. The week warmed up but the nights stayed cool. Then the evening rains started...and since the W in Wyoming stands for Wind...we had that as well. In fact Tuesday night I was in bed when it started and my first thought was, "Hmmmm, if my rig were to tip over is this how I would want to be dressed?" LOL!! Last night I was still dressed when it hit....heavy, heavy winds but they do seem to move through quickly.

Our first SOLOS BOF Social Hour was marked by a member announcing that her cat got loose and she was offering a reward. Tonight the highlight of the SOLOS BOF Social Hour was that member announcing that her cat returned home late last night.

From my seat on the sofa I get to watch everyone walking their dogs. So far I've seen at least two Great Danes, a large Greyhound, several Doxies, lots of Yorkies & Yorkie mixes, a couple of Bassett Hounds, but the most commonly seen dog has been the Schnauzer. The one in the rig across from me makes me giggle every time he goes out for a walk. He prances.....really prances. Reminds me of the gait seen in a Tennessee Walking Horse. He just looks so proud as he prances on his way. I like the temperment of the Schnauzers I've been around...but I wouldn't want to deal with the grooming. I'll get my pet fix from others....LOL!

I needed a clone.....

What a day.....got out on the road at 11am, no need to rush since I was only going 167 miles (Williams to Page). Tires were freshly filled, all the gear was put away, the bicycle was mounted on the back of the car, the tanks were dumped and I headed out.

The drive was amazing.....north out of Flagstaff you rise in elevation, think I saw 7000' sign. Pretty views and lots of anxious traffic that wanted to get around me (and I was doing the 65 mph speed limit). Life's too short to be in such a hurry....

Of course what goes up must come down....but the down grade wasn't bad at all and the next few miles were fairly flat and nondescript. That soon changed...and from this point on I wish I had a clone. The scenery was SPECTACULAR! Remember, Route 89 is just east of the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Red rocks everywhere, striped, stacked, racked...you name it, I saw it. All this is within the bounds of the Navajo Reservation. Along with the rocks crafted with the love and fury of Mother Nature, are houses, trailers, huts, abandoned buildings, high power transmission lines and fences.

It was VERY windy the entire trip and the road was pretty rough in spots. That meant two hands on the steering wheel at ALL times which meant NO photos. Sigh.... Yes there were pull-offs and twice I tried that....both times the pull-out was in a low spot and the scenic beauty...not so much. LOL! I might drive south a little tomorrow in the car and see if I can get a couple of shots.

I arrived at the Page Lake Powell Campground a little after 2pm and got checked into my back-in site. First time I've had a tree on the afternoon sun side providing some shade. Nice....of course it's almost 100 degrees outside....LOL!

Tomorrow I will do laundry first thing in the morning, then do a little sightseeing until it gets too hot to bear. I'm vegging now....already took an Aleve to help the neck. back & overall pain from three hours of white knuckle driving.

Still parked in the campround....

Well, I did end up stashing the tables, chairs & other outdoor stuff yesterday. The wind got too high to take a chance. By 6:00 the sky was dark with threatening clouds and I pulled in my outdoor mat, the last outdoor item, just in case it rained. By 7:00 it poured and in the distance I could hear thunder. The rain continued for two hours...completely unexpected. Then the low dropped into the mid-30's. Actually had to turn the heat back on!

I ended up not moving to a boondocking spot for two reasons. First, I was concerned about the soggy ground. When I drove up there earlier I saw deep ruts where others had to deal with soft ground. The thought of getting up there and getting stuck wasn't at the top of my "to do" list.

The second reason came while I was cleaning the car....trying to get all the dust circles from rain removed (more Protectall cleaning). I was almost done, had the back door open and was stretching to reach the center of the roof. My foot slipped and I wrenched my ankle. Spent most of the day with ice on it, taking aspirin and trying to stay off it as much as possible. It's better tonight but still a little swollen and sore. Sigh....no exercise walking for a couple of days.

Diet went pretty well today, considering I was constantly fighting comfort food urges. LOL!

• Progresso wild rice & chicken (100 calorie cup)
• Pepperidge Farm Stella Dora cookies (3)
• Shredded chicken, marinara sauce & 1/2 can Zucchini w/tomatoes
• Apple
• Quaker multi-grain popcorn mini-cakes (90 calorie package)

For those trying to watch what you eat, I read today about a new way to use text on your cellphone. You can text diet.com to find out what the food values are in several chain restaurants. Sounds interesting....of course I'd have to have one of my kids show me how to text. Oops! Here's a news story on this new use for mobile phones.

The weather still looks good here...I love seeing 85 listed as "very warm". I can deal with that. I've been working on travel routes to Gillette, WY for the Escapade. One route takes me through Beaver, UT....today I read a blog about some folks who are there and they got 5-6" of snow yesterday. EEEK! Sure hope I don't hit snow on the way north....

Communicate: Shouts, Comments & Emails

SHOUTS: As most of you know, you can enter a shout-out in the box on the right hand side of my blog and I will try to reply to you (not always necessary, but I try). This is a quick way to post something short...it is limited but some have even figured out how to enter links (I haven't tried that yet but have seen it.) Most of the time I reply back in less than 24 hours.

COMMENTS: You can also enter a comment and after I approve it (only done to keep out SPAM), it will be displayed. When I reply to comments BUT I don't do it as a comment. Why? Because I personally never go back to blogs where I have entered a comment. I don't track that and it would take up too much time. Most folks that know me will email me back if they feel a reply is needed.

This means several things can happen. If the person who commented has linked to an email address, I can reply back to them. If not, then if I feel the comment is worth going into a "Readers Ask" blog, I save them and post them there with my reply. Otherwise, unless the comment REALLY needs a public reply (which I would then do as a comment - think I've done this twice), then they get no reply. Sorry folks...

EMAILS: My email address is posted on my personal profile/about me blog page. Anyone can email me. Again, I will get back to you if you email me. This is the best way to communicate with me if 1) it's too long for a shout, 2) you don't want to link to an email address in your comment and 3) you would like a reply back.

SOooooo, all this being said, most of you know, if you have had any communications with me, that I get a lot of mail every day and not just from the blog. My average day sees 25-50 valid emails. Factor in the spam and sometimes it's close to 100 a day. I do try to keep up but sometimes life intervenes and I get behind. (Okay, I admit it, I'm usually behind....LOL!)

Right now I have 87 blog comments to review and reply to those that I can, and another 23 emails that need replies. Since today is supposed to be WINDY, then I will try to catch up. Honest! ;-)

Speaking of windy, here is today's weather warning for my area:

A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT SUSTAINED WINDS OF 30 TO 39 MPH...OR GUSTS FROM 40 TO 57 MPH...ARE EXPECTED. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT...ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. CONSIDER SECURING LOOSE BELONGINGS ON YOUR PROPERTY.

It's mostly cloudy but the sun peeks through once in a while. I've battened down the hatches but haven't put away the chairs, they are just pushed flat against the motorhome. Rockin' and Rollin'

Just a quick update....I'm staying here in Huachuca City area until Friday morning due to the high winds. The wind today was supposed to be in the 30-35 mph sustained with gusts higher than that. More of the same tomorrow... It's also so dry...my wood flooring (installed in FL) is separating. I guess that's better than if it were installed out here and in the east it started buckling. LOL!

I spent the day working on a newsletter for the Escapees SOLOS BOF. The due date always sneaks up on me....LOL! But now it's done for another two months. I also spent time organizing the stack of RV related paperwork/manuals I have. I still have a bunch more to go through and then I have to get Quicken up to date. That has to be done before my tax appointment in Denver in June.

Because of the delay here, I am taking the eastern route to Williams since it saves me close to 200 miles. That route is a little over 500 miles so I have plenty of time to make it before my event starts.

Speaking of that, I heard today that the fires in the Grand Canyon area are 60% contained. Not so in NM where as a friend reported in her blog today. Scary....I don't think we've seen a fraction of what is to come this summer.

It was just a drop....

I woke to cool temps and an overcast morning. I figured it was a good time to test out my new California Duster, gotta love a black car in Arizona...especially with a construction site just behind my site. As I was starting out the mobile RV tech arrived and proceeded to get out his gear. Suddenly I noticed a couple of raindrops on the hood of my car. Hmmmm, I didn't think rain was in the forecast. Then it stopped...

He went to work on the first task, adding an Extend-a-Stay valve to my propane connections. This will allow me to use an external tank for emergencies and will also let me run an external propane device directly from the main tank. It was pretty brisk, so after moving my chairs & side table out of his way, I went back inside.

Hmmm, is that raindrops? I go out and sure enough...it's raining enough to see the spots. Lasted a couple of minutes and then, of course, the sun broke through.



Next he tackled my rear brakes...yup, going to need them done. I had heard squealing from the rear right and figured that was coming. But as soon as he had it off and we discussed his coming back the next day...due to iffy weather and needing to get parts, the sky decided to let loose. The wind picked up and it started to rain hard enough that I had to close the door and put up the small window awning.



So, it may never "...rain in southern California" but it sure can here in southern Arizona!

Just a little ramblin'.....

While I took it a little easy today, I did accomplish some stuff but nothing major like yesterday. I plowed through paperwork looking for something specific....I found it but also found some things that need to get taken care of.

One was changing my emergency road service coverage. I have had RV Roadhelp since 2000 and have nothing but good to say about it. Over the years I've had a motorhome towed over 300 miles, a tire changed on my car and two tows for my motorcycle. Great service all times. So why change? Well, the industry has changed and there is now a service Coach Net that offers much more for the same money. Many times when you are broken down it's something minor that a mechanic can quickly fix. Getting back on the road without having to be towed someplace is good. There is a lot more but I don't want to sound like an infomercial. Anyway, the change is made with perfect timing since the old service was due to renew on April 11th.

I canceled several credit cards today or at least started the process to do so. Over the years it's always been easy to apply for a store credit card to get a discount on the first purchase. Figured it was time to cull those out. Since I was doing that, I took a look at what's out there for cash back reward credit cards and decided to move to one of those and cancel my other MC & Visa cards. With gas prices climbing higher and higher it makes sense to get something back for the money I spend. ;-)

I also continued my calls to motorcycle and trailer dealers. Nothing really popped up except a really nice gentleman from Big Tex Trailers here in Tucson offered to stop out to take a look at it from a personal basis. We talked price and he is going to get back to me tomorrow. Not holding out a lot of hope though...wish it were up north. Northern riders are much more apt to use & buy a trailer for their motorcycle. Sigh....

The weather was really nice today, cooler than the last two weeks and little wind. Well, until about 2-3:00 that is....the clouds rolled in and the wind REALLY blew for a bit. It cooled down enough that I started closing windows....of course not before a fine layer of grit was deposited on everything. Of course once the weather tantrum was over it got hot again...LOL!

You know I love blogs....otherwise I wouldn't be following over 170 of them. All kinds - computer, photography, crafts, motorcycles, RVing, living green and more. As I've said before, this wouldn't be possible without Google reader to track & show me only the ones with new updates. I'm always adding new ones that I find by reading my current list....and yes, sometimes one will be removed.

Recently I found a couple of great new blogs, Colored outside the lines and Fulltiming Roadrunners. Both these ladies do some unbelievable beading... Sandy, Colored outside the lines, loves hummingbirds and does some beautiful native-looking necklaces. Judy, Fulltiming Roadrunners, makes beaded Bonzai type trees as well as jewelry. I saw this gorgeous bracelet in her blog and had to email her about it. Long story short, she's made one for me in the colors I asked for...it's perfect.



Well, it would have been perfect if I had asked for a magnet style clasp BEFORE she started. But nice lady that she is, she said she'd put that one into her stock and build one with the clasp I needed (arthritis). She also tossed together a little frog pendant that I plan to use on my key chain. He's so cute....she can make earrings for me, too, if I want them. Since I have NO talent when it comes to crafty stuff, I really appreciate it when I find someone that does. My friends Ellie & Karon do, just to name a couple, even if they don't advertise it much.



Anyway, if anyone is interested in the daisy bracelet, 7" for smaller wrists, drop me a not and I'll put you in touch with Judy. (And remind me that I don't need one of those gorgeous trees...I really don't, I'm getting rid of stuff....LOL!)

Lastly, I made a couple of minor changes to my blog....most to do with the comment section. Previously a pop-up window was opened for the comments but I found that was awkward if you wanted to read the posted comments so I changed it to open a new tab/window. I also added a little note above the comment form and I changed the description for the comment link.

I also expanded the Google ads at the bottom of each post. Like many folks, I try to supplement my income in any way I can...stretching that dollar. Hard in a fifty dollar world....LOL! So if you see something of interest in one of the Google boxes, check it out. If you don't, then don't...it's as easy as that!

Tough life....

I just took a peek at my home portal page where I track the current weather where family & friends live. Granted, it's two to three hours later in all cases except Denver but take a peek...



With highs in the mid to upper 80's, I am running the A/C in the afternoon but by 6:00 I can shut it off and open up the windows. Right now I will be in the campground until April 5th and then either move to local BLM land, if the highs don't stay in the upper 80's, or move northerly. I just hope I can get everything done that needs to be done so I can move north...

Right now I have appointments for the car to get the oil changed, get two new tires and get detailed. I have been thinking about what to get for a vanity tag....maybe POLIWOG? LOL! I still have to make appointments for the RV at three different places - Ford dealer for oil change and recall, Quality Bumper to get the tow setup done (will require the RV and the car) and either a mobile mechanic or LaMesa to get a short laundry list of things fixed. Why is it that just when you think you are simplifying things your to do list triples?

On a side note, last night shortly after the sun was down the coyotes started running the wash down behind the RV park. It may not be to everyone but it was like music to me....hated it when a train had to pick that time to come through and drown them out.

Hoping spring is truly just around the corner for those not enjoying the southern climes....

Hopped to a new location...

Forgive the lack of posting, some of it due to being busy but some of it due to not being busy! LOL!! Back to the end of last week....

As you read in my last post, I survived my first trip into Mexico. But due to visiting the eye doctor so late in the day, I needed to return to pick up my glasses (often you can get same day service if you visit early). The plan was to go in to get my glasses, do a little more window shopping, meet some of the other Boondockers for dinner & drinks before coming home.

So Friday arrived, the plans were set and we headed into Algodones to get my glasses. Not a bit of trouble other than the over-the-nose & ear fittings that are always a pain. Got two nice cases and we headed to do a little window shopping. I wanted to find the leather guy that I had seen before and Doug wanted to look at throws & rugs. Well, the leather guy had his sign up but the sunglass guy in his spot said he wasn't there but would be on Saturday...oh well. After wandering to more unseen areas and looking at various items, we headed to the restaurant as planned.

We ended up with eleven Boondockers...nice group. The vendors love big tables of people, especially ones with drinks on the table (Marguerita's were the order of the day for most folks). As I said, I like hats and was interested in getting one more good straw hat so when the hat vendor came around I asked if he had anything in a small, fully expecting he wouldn't. Well, he did...and everyone liked it on me. So next came the price negotiation...I turned that over to the crowd. Turns out one of the other ladies wanted one and we ended up with two for $28 as compared to the intially quoted price of one for $25. It's very tightly woven with a small plaid hatband and I really like it. The closest I could find online was this Gambler Hat (not exact - the crown on mine isn't as high).



So fast forward and the group decides to visit the infamous Green Door, known by the locals as Bar Olimpico. It has a reputation for some seedier goings on upstairs but for the most part, it was tame by U.S. adult entertainment standards. Everyone had a good time (some "gooder" than others.....hee-hee!) and we were back home by 10 pm.

Saturday Doug and I took a trip into Yuma so he could get propane, diesel for his truck and we ended up getting groceries and having a light dinner. We found his bank, Wells Fargo, inside a Fry's Grocery store so we opted to go ahead and pick up what we each needed since we planned to hit the road on Sunday. As I wandered the store I kept seeing "Kroger" mentioned.

For those who don't know, that is a chain in the east that is operates under the name of Fry's in the west as well as several other names (more details here). Since I didn't have a Fry's discount card, I decided to ask if my Kroger discount card would work. The cashier assured me that it did and I replied that was a shame since I didn't have my card with me, it was on my other keychain. After ensuring that my keychain was in my RV in the area and NOT back at home in another state, he swpied my order with their courtesy card so I could get the discounts (saved $6 off an $85 total). Once I explained that my keys had better be with me since I was a full-timer, we chatted about his parents who are full-timers. Not sure how well the folks behind me took his chatter but I thought it was interesting.

We stopped at a little spot that looked like a diner out of the past, Brownie's Cafe. Super staff, great food...would definitely visit again. By the way, the older gentleman that welcomed up was Brownie's brother....and a wonderful host!

We missed the 4:00 social hour but made the 7:00 campfire. We left early to get our rigs set for a 7 am departure on Sunday. Why so early? Well, the wind was already picking up on Saturday night and much of southern CA and southwest AZ were under an all day high wind warning with gust up to 40-50 mph. We had about 100 miles to travel and wanted to get a little ahead of the worst of it.

Not many photos but here are the final sunrise and sunset shots I took in Winterhaven, CA. YOU decide which is which....if it matters. LOL!




The drive over was amazing...both in the scenery in some spots and in the wind. Phew! Didn't dare take either hand off the steering wheel so no photos of the drive. We stopped in Ehrenberg to dump & take on fresh water and I got propane in Quartzsite at the RV Pit Stop. I can easily manage two weeks on a dump/water stop, and probably could make three if careful. Propane seems to be about a month unless it's really cold.

Anyway, we are now parked between Bouse & Quartzsite, parking on BLM land.I have to take my rig back into Q for a tweak to my inverter but other than that we plan to get the bikes out and hopefully get in some good riding. Here are a few shots of the area.
